What’s on in Sheffield in August 2018

FlyDSA Arena

A very busy month at FlyDSA Arena, with events for all audiences! First up, is Walking with Dinosaurs from 10th until the 11th August. Michaela Strachan presents this incredible production, which features state of the art technology. Watch the 18 life-size creatures walk, roar, and fight right in front of your eyes. For the 5th consecutive year, The Sheffield Film & Comic Con is back at the FlyDSA Arena, and it takes places on the 18th and 19th August. More stars from TV, Film and Comics come to Sheffield, as well as lots of fun activities including photo shoots, panels and autograph sessions. From the 22nd to 26th August you’ll be able to catch one of seven Cirque du Soleil presents OVO performances. This brand-new UK arena tour is a celebration of nature and co-existence, and the fun-filled production is coming to the FlyDSA Arena. It comprises of 50 performing artists from 17 countries specializing in many acrobatic acts, many of whom are the best in their fields. Sheffield Theatres

Starting at the end of July, the show that Ant & Dec have described as being ‘the funniest show we’ve seen’, and the New York Times hailed it as ‘gut-busting’, runs until the 4th August. The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society are putting on a 1920s murder mystery, but don’t expect everything to go smoothly, as this is ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’! From the 7th August until the 11th, you’ll be able to see the Strictly Come Dancing star Joanne Clifton in Flashdance the Musical. Prepare to sing-along to the iconic soundtrack, including the smash hits, Gloria, I Love Rock & Roll and the title track Flashdance – What a Feeling. O2 Academy Sheffield

There’ll be two incredible nights of music in August, just at the opposite ends of the month. On the 3rd August you’ll be able to catch Pete Gallagher’s Rocket Man, which is a wonderful tribute to Elton John’s iconic music. The second night of live music is on the 31st August. A complete change of music in the form of HRH Highway to Hell IX, a competition 10 bands will battle it out in front of a sold-out HRH crowd as well as some judges from the music industry (https://www.hthrocks.com/).

Sheffield City Hall

Each weekend this month, you’ll find Toby Foster’s Last Laugh Comedy Cabaret. You can spend the evening laughing at the three comedians taking to the stage, eating the food on offer, having a few drinks throughout the show, and then dancing until you can’t dance anymore at the after-show disco. What’s on in Sheffield in July 2018

Sheffield Theatres

July promises to be an incredible month at the Lyceum Theatre! The month kicks off with the world premiere of the landmark new musical, Dusty, based on the authorised biography of Dusty Springfield. It features many of her pop hits, including ‘I Only Want to Be with You’, ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ and ‘You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me’, and was written by BAFTA and Olivier nominated writer Jonathan Harvey. From 16th until 21st July, Thriller Live heads straight to Sheffield from the West End. Celebrating the musical legacy of Michael Jackson, it is now in its record-breaking 10th year! Another show straight from the West End is the improv musical comedy, Showstopper: The Improvised Musical! It’s an Olivier award-winning show, where the audience suggestions are turned into hilarious singing and dance numbers. If you suggest it, they’ll do it! With a sensational string section and a stunning light show, The ELO Experience comes to Sheffield to celebrate the music of The Electric Light Orchestra on 14th July. Enjoy this incredible show as the songs and sounds of ELO are reproduced and take you on a magical musical journey through time. On 15th July, King Of Pop Feat Navi & Jennifer Batten comes to Sheffield City Hall. Another tribute to Michael Jackson, the world’s leading Michael Jackson tribute artist, Navi, is joined by his iconic guitarist, Jennifer Batten. Michael Jackson picked Navi himself to be his body double, to perform at two of his own birthday parties and he’ll also be playing him in an upcoming Hollywood film about the star. Jennifer Batten was his selected guitarist for three of MJ’s sell-out world tours, and even the SuperBowl performance. This 7th July in support of Cancer Research UK, Roxy Reunion: 80s Pop Disco comes to Sheffield for a great night full of cheesy 80s pop music!
