Fly DSA Arena

Following on from the success of 2016 and 2017, Yorkshire Cosplay Con is returning to Sheffield on the 2nd and 3rd June for the 3rd consecutive year! Not only will famous stars of TV shows and movies be there, but the event has live stage performances, activities suitable for families, including workshops, gaming events, and roleplay games.  Yorkshire Cosplay Con has been described as the ultimate family day out. So even if you don’t go there dressed up, you can still head across and have a great day there, but I bet when you leave the event, you’ll be planning what you’re going to go as next year (http://www.flydsaarena.co.uk/whats-on/yorkshire-cosplay-con-2018-5563#eventddLink).

Now this one is massive! American pop superstar Katy Perry is live in Sheffield as part of her ‘Witness’ Tour. Supported by actress and musician Hailee Steinfeld, Katy Perry will perform some of the decades biggest pop songs as well as her latest hits of her most recent album ‘Chained to the Rhythm’. After rising to fame in 2008, she’s topped charts across the world, won numerous awards and become one of the leading females in pop music. This is guaranteed to be an incredible live show, taking place on 19th June (http://www.flydsaarena.co.uk/whats-on/katy-perry-5552#eventddLink).

Another incredible act this month taking to the stage it one of the UK’s most loved comedians, Michael McIntyre. His Big World Tour comes to Sheffield on the 23rd June, and he’s not unfamiliar to sell-out worldwide tours, holding records in many countries for having the biggest selling comedy tour, and has sold over 1.5 million tickets in the UK. I can’t explain how funny he is, and I probably don’t need to as I’m sure you’re already aware at just how much of a comedy genius he is. If you want to come to Sheffield and have an evening of non-stop laughter, here’s the link (http://www.flydsaarena.co.uk/whats-on/michael-mcintyre-5583#eventddLink).

From 9th until the 11th June in the Studio Theatre, you could watch a range of interviews as part of the Sheffield Doc/Fest. To me, the main highlight would be the interview with legend Sir Trevor McDonald as he discusses what drives to make some of the most moving and gripping documentaries. However, you could also listen to Munroe Bergdorf talk women, gender & activism, listen to a BAFTA Masterclass with Matthew Heineman or listen to BAFTA winning actress Vicky McClure talk Dementia and Music (https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on?from=2018-06-01&genre=&q=&to=2018-06-30&venue=Studio).

Something on the opposite end of the spectrum now compared to what I’ve just spoke about, is the Opera and Ballet International, performing Verdi La Traviata. You’ve seen it on television, so why not head over and watch it in person (http://flydsaarena.co.uk/whats-on/britains-strongest-man-2018-5549/).

SHEFFIELD THEATRES

It’s no surprise that Sheffield has iconic theatres, one of which is the Crucible Theatre. Due to popular demand, the production of the timeless classic The Wizard of Oz, has been extended until the 13th January, meaning you have more time to go and watch the show that’s received 5-star ratings from both The Observer and The Reviews Hub, as well as being described as having ‘laugh out loud moments for young and old alike’ from The Sheffield Star (https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/the-wizard-of-oz).

Another iconic theatre in Sheffield is the Lyceum theatre. Throughout January it has shows for all types of audiences, including The Nutcracker from 9th until the 13th January (https://sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/the-nutcracker), Strangers on a Train from 15th until the 20th January (https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/strangers-on-a-train), and Hairspray: The Musical from the 29th January (https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/hairspray-2). The shows have already received remarkable reviews, and vary from powerful ballet, to a dramatic mystery, to an upbeat feel-good classic. These two theatres are also within walking distance from our West Street location as well as the Cathedral Quarter, and are surrounded with restaurants meaning you won’t be going hungry.

Christmas in Sheffield

Christmas in Sheffield

Christmas, a time when Michael Bublé comes out of hibernation to release another Christmas album, a time when Home Alone can be replayed again and again, and a time when pigs in blankets are a necessity on the dinner table. It’s the same every year, but that’s what a tradition is. But you can still have a traditional Christmas in an nontraditional location. If you want Christmas 2017 to be different from the rest of them, why not come to Sheffield and book one of our modern 2-bedroom penthouse apartments. Spend the festive period in a stylish and modern apartment with a balcony that overlooks the heart of the city centre. There’s so much to do over the Christmas period here in Sheffield, so topping it off with a great penthouse apartment to go back to is a must! The West Street location really is a perfect one, being a few minutes-walk away from the shopping district, Fargate, as well as being across the road from Leopold Square, which is full of renowned restaurants and bars, with West Street itself also home to many more great bars and popular restaurants.

What’s On

So, what’s on over this festive period in Sheffield? From now until Christmas Eve, Fargate, Town Hall Square and the Peace Gardens are playing host to the Sheffield Christmas Market, where there are 50 cabins full of fantastic Christmas gifts and lots of seasonal food and drinks. The Sleigh Bar is a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike, along with the traditional German sausage grill. There’s something for the kids too, as Santa’s Grotto means a meeting with Santa along with a photo and gift. After tucking into what’s on offer at the market, you can make the short walk back past the City Hall, which looks incredible at night, back to the warm and cosy penthouse.

There’s more than just a Christmas Market taking place over the course of December. If it’s live shows that you’re into, then book tickets to see this year’s fun-filled family pantomime, Mother Goose, with showings starting on the 8th December 2017 and finishing on 7th January 2018 at The Lyceum Theatre. More information about this pantomime can be found at https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/mother-goose. The popularity of The Wizard of Oz at The Crucible Theatre has seen it extend all the way up until 20th January 2018, showing just how good this musical is going to be. Ticket information can be found at https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/the-wizard-of-oz. City Hall is also showcasing the beloved Sleeping Beauty Live from 27th December 2017 to 7th January 2018 in the beautiful Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall. If you haven’t already spent a wonderful evening at this incredible venue, follow the link to find out more, http://www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events/Manor-Operatic-Sleeping-Beauty. With such great performances playing over this festive period, you’ll have time to go and watch something whatever dates you chose to stay in Sheffield!

Subject to availability, our apartments offer parking on-site, allowing you to bring your car so that you can drive to other attractions that are too far to walk to.  One of these attractions could be Meadowhall, where there are 280 major high street stores as well as independent shops, not to mention a food court with plenty of delicious paces to eat.  The Tropical Butterfly House has a few things going off over this period, with Christmas Afternoon Tea running up until Christmas Eve, with this location being ranked number one in things to do in Sheffield on TripAdvisor.

Another festive favourite amongst locals is Thor’s Tipi Bar, located in the Peace Gardens. Inside you’ll find cosy log fires and twinkling lights, but outside you’ll enjoy the Winter garden with Christmas trees, lights and outdoor heating. Whether it’s food or drink that you’re after, this has them both. You can then make the short walk back to your penthouse apartment, where you’ll be able to see the dazzling Christmas lights, on Fargate, Town Hall Square, the Peace Gardens or on City Hall, as well as the giant Christmas tree.

Christmas Day in the Apartment

As I stated earlier, the untraditional setting does not mean that you can’t have a traditional Christmas. Waking up in a double bed at the crack of dawn will be the same wherever you are, our penthouse apartment won’t change that, but what will be different is that you’ll be in a luxurious modern apartment. However, just because it’s modern does not mean that it can’t be cosy. You might not be able to sit around the fireplace, but you will be kept warm with the central heating throughout the apartment, so you won’t have to worry about being cold as long you keep the door closed that leads to the corner balcony. But if the snow is falling, you will have incredible views over the city, so you might need to open that door to get some great photos!

Free Wi-Fi means that you can get online and listen to your favourite Christmas playlist whilst watching your loved ones opening their presents. You can be singing along to Wham and making a list of who bought who, what, whilst trying to plan your TV schedule for the day. The large television comes with a Freesat box, meaning you won’t be short of channels to choose from.

Carver Lane car park is only minutes away, so you can have family and friends over for that midday feast. If you’re wanting to cook your own Christmas dinner, then the oven is plenty big enough to fit a turkey in, so you won’t be short of space. With your family or friends round, you can sit on the large kitchen island as well as in the living room to eat the meal, and the dishwasher will come in very handy when you don’t fancy washing everything up by hand. If you don’t want to cook this Christmas, the apartment is across the road from the renowned Zizzi’s Italian Restaurant that offers a very festive Christmas menu. If you’re after something more traditional, then Brown’s Bar & Brasserie by the Peace Gardens will be more what you’re after also offer a festive menu with a succulent roast turkey with all the trimmings being at the top of it.

You can take a stroll back through the city, looking at the Christmas lights as I stated earlier, before arriving back to your lovely and warm apartment, ready to cosy up in front of the TV. After indulging yourself in the Christmas specials, you can wake up anyone who fell asleep in that post-feast food-coma, because it’s time for the annual argument over Monopoly. When the night time rolls around, you can turn the main lights off and switch on the lamps and work surface lights, making this modern penthouse even cosier. You might want to leave some of the blinds open however, because watching the snow fall over the city is such a beautiful sight. A busy yet unforgettable day, done for another year. It’s finally time to get back into your warm and comfortable double bed to head to sleep.

To top it off, if you book 7 nights or more, you’ll get a discount, thus saving you money to spend on other things. With so much to do in Sheffield over this period, including pantomimes, shows, markets, afternoon tea, festive menu’s, photo opportunities with Santa and a beautiful penthouse apartment to reside in through it all, why not do Christmas a little differently this year?
