What’s on in Sheffield in January 2018

SHEFFIELD CITY HALL

I’m sure you’re already aware that Sheffield is home to some great venues, whether it be for sport, music, comedy or shows. One of which is Sheffield City Hall. It has a very wide selection of entertainment on over the course of the month, varying from stand-up comedy to ballroom dancing throughout the month. It will soon be the last chance to take the little ones to the pantomime with the Christmas period coming to an end, meaning Sleeping Beauty is set to close on the 7th January. It’s the Manor Operatic Society’s annual show, and it would be a shame to miss out on seeing this family favourite, especially if singing, dancing and audience participation is what you’re in to (http://sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events/Manor-Operatic-Sleeping-Beauty).

If you love Waltzing or Foxtrotting across the dancefloor, then Sheffield City Hall Ballroom is a perfect place to do so. On many dates between 4th January to the 30th, it plays host to the Dancing in the Ballroom Tea Dances, offering a wonderful place to dance as well as eat and drink (http://sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events/dancing-in-the-ballroom). If you aren’t much of a dancer or just prefer to watch, on the 18th January Brendan Cole’s All Night Long tour is coming the City Hall. The Strictly Come Dancing star brings a performance full of dazzling choreography and a sensational cast of dancers to the city for one night only (http://sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events/Brendan-Cole-2018).

Also taking to the stage this month is the scouse comedic genius John Bishop as part of his Winging It tour on the 11th January (http://sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events/John-Bishop-2018), Joel Dommett on the 25th January (http://sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events/Joel-Dommett) and the controversial Roy Chubby Brown on the 13th January (http://sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events/Roy-Chubby-Brown-2018. John Bishop’s latest tour has received incredible reviews promising it is his best one yet, whilst Joel Dommett is regarded as one of the UKs most exciting comedians. If you want even more humour, Yorkshire’s longest running comedy club Last Laugh Comedy Cabaret, is coming to Sheffield. The comedy takes place on Friday and Saturday each week, 5th and 6th, 12th and 13th, 19th and 20th, 26th and 27th and showcases different comedians each show. There’s food, drinks and a dancefloor for after the show (http://sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/lastlaugh).

International clubbing brand Gatecrasher is coming back to Sheffield, but this time it’s with a twist, Gatecrasher Classical Version 2.1. It’s a night full of some of the biggest trance tracks as you’ve never heard them before, being played by a 50-piece orchestra. With an incredible laser light show included, what’s not to like? (https://www.skiddle.com/whats-on/Sheffield/Sheffield-City-Hall/Gatecrasher-Classical-V21-/13092515/). The end of the month sees Whitney: Queen of the Night take the stage, on 28th January. A line-up of incredible musicians and singers take to the stage to channel their inner Whitney, performing some of her biggest and most memorable hits (https://sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events/Whitney-Queen-of-the-Night-2018).

Located in the heart of the city centre, Sheffield City Hall is surrounded by great restaurants and bars, meaning there’s always somewhere to go after the event is over. It is also situated across the road from our West Street location, so if you do decide to come and see something then our apartments will be perfect for you.

FLYDSA ARENA

If you’re wanting to travel a bit further afield, such as to the FlyDSA Arena, a low-cost taxi can pick you up and bring you straight there, or you could make the most of the close proximity to a tram stop that would also bring you straight to the venue.

Unlike Sheffield City Hall, this venue has two very special one-off events taking place this January. The first of which is the World’s Number 1 Indoor Motorcycle Trial. The world’s best riders are all coming to Sheffield to showcase their talents by riding over extremely dangerous obstacles in the fastest time they can. It’s fast-paced and dangerous, what’s not to enjoy? (http://flydsaarena.co.uk/whats-on/worlds-no1-indoor-motorcycle-trial-5562/#eventddLink). If this isn’t for you, then instead you might fancy going to watch the legendary Britain’s Strongest Man 2018 contest. The country’s strongest men will all be coming to the Steel City to take part in the ultimate showdown of strength. You’ve seen it on television, so why not head over and watch it in person (http://flydsaarena.co.uk/whats-on/britains-strongest-man-2018-5549/).

SHEFFIELD THEATRES

It’s no surprise that Sheffield has iconic theatres, one of which is the Crucible Theatre. Due to popular demand, the production of the timeless classic The Wizard of Oz, has been extended until the 13th January, meaning you have more time to go and watch the show that’s received 5-star ratings from both The Observer and The Reviews Hub, as well as being described as having ‘laugh out loud moments for young and old alike’ from The Sheffield Star (https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/the-wizard-of-oz).

Another iconic theatre in Sheffield is the Lyceum theatre. Throughout January it has shows for all types of audiences, including The Nutcracker from 9th until the 13th January (https://sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/the-nutcracker), Strangers on a Train from 15th until the 20th January (https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/strangers-on-a-train), and Hairspray: The Musical from the 29th January (https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/hairspray-2). The shows have already received remarkable reviews, and vary from powerful ballet, to a dramatic mystery, to an upbeat feel-good classic. These two theatres are also within walking distance from our West Street location as well as the Cathedral Quarter, and are surrounded with restaurants meaning you won’t be going hungry.

As you’ve just read, Sheffield has so much to offer this month, so make the most of what the city has to offer and book accommodation with us so that you don’t miss out. Why not make your new years resolution to be to come and spend some time in Sheffield in 2018.

Christmas in Sheffield

Christmas in Sheffield

Christmas, a time when Michael Bublé comes out of hibernation to release another Christmas album, a time when Home Alone can be replayed again and again, and a time when pigs in blankets are a necessity on the dinner table. It’s the same every year, but that’s what a tradition is. But you can still have a traditional Christmas in an nontraditional location. If you want Christmas 2017 to be different from the rest of them, why not come to Sheffield and book one of our modern 2-bedroom penthouse apartments. Spend the festive period in a stylish and modern apartment with a balcony that overlooks the heart of the city centre. There’s so much to do over the Christmas period here in Sheffield, so topping it off with a great penthouse apartment to go back to is a must! The West Street location really is a perfect one, being a few minutes-walk away from the shopping district, Fargate, as well as being across the road from Leopold Square, which is full of renowned restaurants and bars, with West Street itself also home to many more great bars and popular restaurants.

What’s On

So, what’s on over this festive period in Sheffield? From now until Christmas Eve, Fargate, Town Hall Square and the Peace Gardens are playing host to the Sheffield Christmas Market, where there are 50 cabins full of fantastic Christmas gifts and lots of seasonal food and drinks. The Sleigh Bar is a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike, along with the traditional German sausage grill. There’s something for the kids too, as Santa’s Grotto means a meeting with Santa along with a photo and gift. After tucking into what’s on offer at the market, you can make the short walk back past the City Hall, which looks incredible at night, back to the warm and cosy penthouse.

There’s more than just a Christmas Market taking place over the course of December. If it’s live shows that you’re into, then book tickets to see this year’s fun-filled family pantomime, Mother Goose, with showings starting on the 8th December 2017 and finishing on 7th January 2018 at The Lyceum Theatre. More information about this pantomime can be found at https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/mother-goose. The popularity of The Wizard of Oz at The Crucible Theatre has seen it extend all the way up until 20th January 2018, showing just how good this musical is going to be. Ticket information can be found at https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/the-wizard-of-oz. City Hall is also showcasing the beloved Sleeping Beauty Live from 27th December 2017 to 7th January 2018 in the beautiful Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall. If you haven’t already spent a wonderful evening at this incredible venue, follow the link to find out more, http://www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events/Manor-Operatic-Sleeping-Beauty. With such great performances playing over this festive period, you’ll have time to go and watch something whatever dates you chose to stay in Sheffield!

Subject to availability, our apartments offer parking on-site, allowing you to bring your car so that you can drive to other attractions that are too far to walk to.  One of these attractions could be Meadowhall, where there are 280 major high street stores as well as independent shops, not to mention a food court with plenty of delicious paces to eat.  The Tropical Butterfly House has a few things going off over this period, with Christmas Afternoon Tea running up until Christmas Eve, with this location being ranked number one in things to do in Sheffield on TripAdvisor.

Another festive favourite amongst locals is Thor’s Tipi Bar, located in the Peace Gardens. Inside you’ll find cosy log fires and twinkling lights, but outside you’ll enjoy the Winter garden with Christmas trees, lights and outdoor heating. Whether it’s food or drink that you’re after, this has them both. You can then make the short walk back to your penthouse apartment, where you’ll be able to see the dazzling Christmas lights, on Fargate, Town Hall Square, the Peace Gardens or on City Hall, as well as the giant Christmas tree.

Christmas Day in the Apartment

As I stated earlier, the untraditional setting does not mean that you can’t have a traditional Christmas. Waking up in a double bed at the crack of dawn will be the same wherever you are, our penthouse apartment won’t change that, but what will be different is that you’ll be in a luxurious modern apartment. However, just because it’s modern does not mean that it can’t be cosy. You might not be able to sit around the fireplace, but you will be kept warm with the central heating throughout the apartment, so you won’t have to worry about being cold as long you keep the door closed that leads to the corner balcony. But if the snow is falling, you will have incredible views over the city, so you might need to open that door to get some great photos!

Free Wi-Fi means that you can get online and listen to your favourite Christmas playlist whilst watching your loved ones opening their presents. You can be singing along to Wham and making a list of who bought who, what, whilst trying to plan your TV schedule for the day. The large television comes with a Freesat box, meaning you won’t be short of channels to choose from.

Carver Lane car park is only minutes away, so you can have family and friends over for that midday feast. If you’re wanting to cook your own Christmas dinner, then the oven is plenty big enough to fit a turkey in, so you won’t be short of space. With your family or friends round, you can sit on the large kitchen island as well as in the living room to eat the meal, and the dishwasher will come in very handy when you don’t fancy washing everything up by hand. If you don’t want to cook this Christmas, the apartment is across the road from the renowned Zizzi’s Italian Restaurant that offers a very festive Christmas menu. If you’re after something more traditional, then Brown’s Bar & Brasserie by the Peace Gardens will be more what you’re after also offer a festive menu with a succulent roast turkey with all the trimmings being at the top of it.

You can take a stroll back through the city, looking at the Christmas lights as I stated earlier, before arriving back to your lovely and warm apartment, ready to cosy up in front of the TV. After indulging yourself in the Christmas specials, you can wake up anyone who fell asleep in that post-feast food-coma, because it’s time for the annual argument over Monopoly. When the night time rolls around, you can turn the main lights off and switch on the lamps and work surface lights, making this modern penthouse even cosier. You might want to leave some of the blinds open however, because watching the snow fall over the city is such a beautiful sight. A busy yet unforgettable day, done for another year. It’s finally time to get back into your warm and comfortable double bed to head to sleep.

To top it off, if you book 7 nights or more, you’ll get a discount, thus saving you money to spend on other things. With so much to do in Sheffield over this period, including pantomimes, shows, markets, afternoon tea, festive menu’s, photo opportunities with Santa and a beautiful penthouse apartment to reside in through it all, why not do Christmas a little differently this year? Sheffield is a great place for a night out as the possibilities are endless for where to start and finish your night. For instance, speaking strictly city centre there are all the top clubs, pubs and restaurants. So to help you have the perfect night out, we have devised a list of all the best places to eat, drink and socialise.

Restaurants:

  1. The best restaurant for the City Centre is without a shadow of a doubt BB’s Italian Restaurant on Division Street. It sells arguably the best Steak in Sheffield and is more than reasonably priced. The restaurant has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and the staff are all very welcoming.
  2. The next is Piccolino’s and this is a very, very close second. Serving up some of the best food in the city centre and have one of the best interiors for a restaurant in the whole of Sheffield. The recommended meal here is certainly the Pizza Piccante.
  3. Third on the list is Brown’s. A small restaurant located near the peace gardens that is very popular on a night out. Selling not only delicious food, it is also very popular due to its array of drinks. Unlike the other two on the list, Brown’s is popular at all times of the day due to people going in for coffee or a general drink. The meal recommended here: Browns classic Burger. It is divine!

Bars and Clubs:

  1. Revolucion De Cuba is certainly one the trendier places to visit and this is largely down to its exceptional atmosphere. It has live bands playing on a weekly basis and an unbelievable selection of cocktails. Definitely a place to visit for a night to remember.
  2. Closely behind is The Wick at Both Ends. Renowned around Sheffield for its wide array of real ales and stunning selection of classic cocktails this pub is one place to visit when going a night out around Sheffield.
  3. Last but not least is Be At One. A lovely bar with a London nightclub feel to it and has a late night license meaning you can party later than the standard bar! Keep warm this January!

Weather can sure affect a holiday or work trip, especially in January when it gets colder. Here are some useful tips on keeping warm in this cold period.

Go to bed warm

Warmth originates from within, any insulations is merely concerned with keeping it there. So take a nice warm bath before snuggling under a duvet with a preferably higher tog count.

Layer like you mean it

This is a habit most people have already adopted but not everyone gets it right – you can be warm without looking like you gained 10 pounds in material. We wear Uniqlo’s Heattech under our jumpers, or grab some tights that are fleece-lined to wear under your jeans. These are life-savers without all the thickness (excellent as well when packing your suitcase for a winter holiday)

Hot Beverages (not booze!)

Hot soups, teas and coffees will help warm your body so get a thermos flask to carry around. Note that alcoholic beverages reduce your body temperature – not the best to keep warm.

Electric Hot Water bottles are mini life savers

If you’re travelling, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to pack your favourite electric blanket. This is when your electric hot water bottle comes in handy, this handy thing charges in an instant and can warm up a whole bed. This is also a lot more convenient than filling up a regular hot water bottle!

Your New Year’s Resolutions

A New Year rolls around, and that means many people listing down their New Year’s resolutions. While fun to make, these aren’t always the easiest to maintain. Studies have shown that come around June time, less than half are still on target. Fret not, we’ve listed some resolutions that aren’t impossible to follow and are worthy of sticking to.

New Year, A Healthier You!

Don’t just say I want to lose 10 pounds this year, list out small good habits you want to adopt. Easy small ones we can all follow: get more sleep, cut your stress, aim to eat one green a day, take the stairs instead of elevators etc. Pledging and writing small goals help to achieve a bigger one without losing focus.

Be Nicer to People

Want a promotion in 2015? Simply try being more giving to your co-workers, studies have broken that being more generous at the workplaces leads to gaining more respect and cooperation from peers.

Recognise your bad habits and work to stop them

Everyone has different bad habits, take the time while making resolutions to list a few and choose which you would like to stop.

Switch Off & Focus on Yourself

These days when we’re ‘alone’, we never really have time for ourselves as we’re still online and connected in more ways than one. Schedule ‘me’ time by turning off your mobile phone, computer and other electronic devices. Focus on your spiritual well-being.

Learn someone else’s resolution

Everyone struggles to keep up with their new year’s resolution, having a buddy there helps. Learn a good friend’s resolution and help them achieve their goals, it’s likely they’ll do the same for you.

Keep it simple and keep your expectations realistic. While its great to have big goals, it can be difficult achieving those without planning small steps and celebrating the small wins. Be proud when you stick to your resolutions – it’s not always an easy feat!
