Matthew Helders is an English musician and DJ, best known as the drummer and lead backing vocals for indie rock band Arctic Monkeys. Born in High Green, Sheffield on the 7th May 1986, Helders went to college in Barnsley with band mate Alex and had A-levels in music technique. The band rose to fame in October 2005 with “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor”. The following January they released their album Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not, the fastest selling debut album in British history at the time.
This home grown band has stayed in the Sheffield area, saying ‘we still all Iive in the same place we grew up. It’s probably how we were brought up. We’re never going to move away to London’ and still stick to their roots by insisting on singing in their native Sheffield accent.
Arctic Monkeys recently made Official UK Albums Chart history with their new album ‘AM’. Released by Domino Records it is the band’s fifth consecutive Number One and the first indie-released album to achieve such a feat.
